Ganciclovir, a nucleoside antiviral drug, is a guanine nucleoside derivative. It has a broad-spectrum and high-efficiency inhibitory effect on herpes virus, and is the drug of choice for the treatment of cytomegalovirus infection. It also has a strong effect on hepatitis B virus and adenovirus.

It is clinically used for induction and maintenance treatment of immunocompromised patients (including AIDS patients) complicated with cytomegalovirus retinitis. It can also be used to prevent cytomegalovirus infection in recipients of organ transplants and to prevent cytomegalovirus disease in AIDS patients who are positive for cytomegalovirus serotesting.
